Shat Tila Ekadashi (षटतिला एकादशी) is observed on the 11th day of the Krishna Paksha (the waning phase of moon) during the month of ‘Magh’ in the Hindi calendar. By observing a fast on this day; devotees can end all their miseries and misfortunes.
Shat Tila Ekadashi is also called as Tilda Ekadashi. In sinskrit 'Shat' means six and 'Tila' means sesame seeds. On this day til or sesame seeds are used in six different ways. Use of ‘til’ is considered to be very auspicious on this day as it provides both, religious merits and spiritual purification. On this day there is a great implication of donating sesame seeds to the poor and hungry. On Shat Tila Ekadashi there is also a custom of offering sesame seeds and water to the forefathers or ancestors.

पद्म पुराण के अनुसार, एक महिला भगवान विष्णु की परम भक्त थी। वह रोजाना भगवान विष्णु की पूजा, व्रत आदि बेहद श्रद्धापूर्वक करती थी। व्रत रखने से उसका मन और शरीर तो शुद्ध हो गया था। लेकिन उसने कभी भी अन्न का दान नहीं किया था। जब महिला मृत्यु के बाद बैकुंठ पहुंची तो उसे एक खाली कुटिया मिली।
अपने लिए खाली कुटिया देखकर महिला ने बैकुंठ में भगवान विष्णु से पूछा कि मुझे खाली कुटिया ही मिली है? तब भगवान ने बताया कि तुमने कभी कुछ दान नहीं किया है इसलिए तुम्हें यह फल मिला। मैं तुम्हारे उद्धार के लिए एकबार तुम्हारे पास भिक्षा मांगने आया था तो तुमने मुझे मिट्टी का एक ढेला पकड़ा दिया।
अब तुम षट्तिला एकादशी का व्रत करो। जब महिला ने व्रत किया तो व्रत पूजन करने के बाद उसकी कुटिया अन्न-धन से भर गई और वह बैकुंठ में अपना जीवन हंसी-खुशी बिताने लगी।
