Kalash sthapana has very important significance in Navratra. We have certain guidelines to perform kalash sthapana at specific time on first Navratra.

The most auspicious time to do Kalash sthapana is first one third of the day while Pratipada prevails. Kalash sthapana can be done during Abhijit Muhurta (usually between 11:45 am to 12:15 pm everyday) as well.

Kalash is prepared before invoking the Goddess.

1 - Prepare Grain Pot

Take the clay pot to sow the grains. Create first layer of soil into the pot and spread the grain seeds over it. Now add the grains round the corners of pot. Now spread the third and final layer of the soil into the pot. If needed add little water to the pot to set the soil.

2 - Prepare Kalash

Tie the sacred thread on the neck of the Kalash and fill it up with the holy water up to the neck. Place betel nuts, grass, Akshat (rice), scent and coins into the water. Keep 5 leaves of Ashoka at the edge of the Kalash before covering it with a lid. Cover it with lid. Fill up the lid full of rice.

3 – Assemble Kalash and Grain Pot

Wrap the unpeeled coconut with the red cloth. Tie the coconut and red cloth with the sacred thread. Now keep the coconut on top of the Kalash we prepared earlier. And then put the Kalash at the center of the grain pot prepared in step 1.

4 - Invoke Goddess Durga

Now we have Kalash ready to call Goddess Durga into it. Now invoke Goddess Durga and request Her to accept your prayers and to oblige you by residing into the Kalash for nine days.

5- Panchopachara Pooja

It is done with five Pooja items. First Show the lamp to the Kalash and all deities invoked in it. Then lit Dhoop sticks and offer it to the Kalash, followed by flowers and scent. Finally offer fruits and sweets to the Kalash to conclude Panchopachara Puja.
